Wednesday Programme

Every Wednesday we run an alternative learning programme for all students. Students are able to select and participate in a number of vocational subjects allowing them to pursue various interests and career paths.

Our 'Why'

Traditional educational frameworks do not, and never have, worked for everyone. By doing things slightly differently, we have the potential to reach a wider variety of students, and keep them engaged in school while looking ahead to their future. In a diverse community like ours, this is so important.

How the Wednesday Programme works

On Wednesdays, all students come out of their ‘regular’ classes, and engage in their chosen Pro-Ject and Elective.

Subject options change frequently, so there is always something new to try. Current programme descriptions are shown on and selected from the Helix website at the beginning of Term 1 and 3 each year.

What are Electives?

Electives happen in the morning, and are generally one term long. They are all about engagement and growing student leadership. Getting kids to school, having fun, supporting their hauora, passions, and interests. Sports, cultural groups, and student councils all fit into the Elective kaupapa. Electives give kids the chance to ‘find their tribe’.

What are Pro-Jects?

Pro-Jects run over two sessions after the first and second breaks. They are generally two terms long. The intention of Pro-Jects is for ākonga to explore potential future pathways through hands-on, innovative learning opportunities. Pro-Ject courses link to one of the six Vocational Pathways.

The learning in Pro-Jects should be robust. Students may be working towards certificates, licences, credits, micro-credentials, or simply gaining experience to determine if the kaupapa is something they would like to pursue as a future pathway.
